Upstream Color (2013) | Film Review

(Originally published on Letterboxd) - Upstream Color is the aggressively annoying, obnoxiously pretentious, experimental art film from writer/director, Shane Carruth.

While Carruth seemed content with testing patience with his first film about time travel called, Primer--here it's all about manipulation... and patience testing once again. I think that's just his gimmick.

While I'd love to describe for you the story of Upstream Color, I fear giving any portion of this already flimsy plot away would only encourage you to seek it out, because it sounds so much cooler than it actually is. What I can say is this: Shane Carruth doesn't give a shit about his audience. He makes his films for himself, and while I think there is a nobility in that, I can make the same argument for Bill Zebub of Antfarm Dickhole fame, so its safe to say that nobility doesn't necessarily equal quality.

Watching Upstream Color is like taking the Pepsi challenge, if the Pepsi is poured over mill worms that when drank renders you a slave of a thief who wants to steal an hour and a half from your life. Avoid at all costs.
